About Katie
Katie Down, MT-BC, LCAT, MMT, MM is a board-certified music therapist and licensed creative arts therapist with post-graduate certifications in EMDR and MBSR. She received her MA in music psychotherapy from New York University and in composition from the New England Conservatory of Music. She completed post-graduate training at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy in New York and through the Parnell Institute for EMDR. 
She is trained in both music and music psychotherapy as well as
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Sound Healing, and Reiki (level 1 and 2) and works with adults of all ages facing issues of depression, anxiety, and symptoms of trauma. She is the lead music therapist for the New York chapter of 
 
The Angel Band Project , which provides free music therapy services to survivors of sexual assault and intimate partner violence in 6-8 week sessions online and in person. 

Katie is also a highly-skilled multi-instrumentalist and flutist as well as composer and sound designer and brings with her a wide range of musical talents and approaches from classical to Balkan to jazz and free improvisation. She's been a figure in the downtown music scene in New York and regularly performs with a variety of groups in NYC and the Hudson Valley. 

She is a full-time professor of music therapy at SUNY New Paltz and holds her own private training and certification programs in sound therapy once a year. She has been a regular guest lecturer at NYU, Vassar College, The New School, The School for Visual Arts, Cal State Fullerton, The Jewish Theologic Seminary, Hofstra University, and many grand rounds at local hospitals including Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, Bronx Psychiatric Hospital, Kings County Hospital, and Jamaica Hospital. 

Katie works with students in how to deeply listen and engage with curiosity, wonder, and a sense of compassion as they embark on their careers in the music therapy and sound healing fields and she provides mentoring and clinical supervision to all her former students and trainees. 

With over 15 years of clinical experience and with techniques based in mindfulness meditation, Katie is able to help her clients work through and be able to let go of trauma and symptoms of PTSD with EMDR, music, and somatic therapies. She also works with clients looking to deepen their understanding of old patterns, behaviors and thought processes based on habits or family dynamics that no longer serve them and to accept and love themselves for their highest good while working towards their personal goals.
